The Rare Luxury of Calm: How Harbour Village Bonaire Is Building the Future of Island Hospitality
Some properties earn loyalty through scale and spectacle. Harbour Village Bonaire earns it through something harder to manufacture: genuine connection. The award-winning, 40-room boutique resort sits on the island’s only private beach, where world-class coral reefs begin just steps from the shore, and a team (many of whom have been there for 15, even 30 years) knows returning guests by name, by preference, and by instinct.
Jessica Gonzalez, VP of Hotel Operations, oversees a property that brings together diving, wellness, marina access, and fine dining into a single, intimate experience on one of the Caribbean’s most unspoiled islands. With wellness investments underway and a philosophy rooted in restoration over excess, Gonzalez is shaping what the next chapter of island luxury looks like. We sat down with her to explore how Harbour Village delivers personalization at a level that larger properties simply can’t replicate.
Creating a Distinctive Luxury Experience
Harbour Village Bonaire combines a private beach, luxury accommodations, diving, wellness, and a marina. How do you bring these diverse experiences together to create a cohesive luxury guest journey, and what details make the experience truly memorable?
For us, the guest journey begins long before anyone arrives. As an intimate, boutique resort, we can offer a level of personal attention that larger properties simply can't. Our team reaches out to each guest ahead of their stay to learn what they're hoping for and to help plan their time, from excursions to fine dining, so every experience feels curated and effortless.
Our concierge team brings the full range of Bonaire's adventures within easy reach, whether that's a fishing charter, a catamaran sail, or a day of diving and snorkeling. For divers, our dive valet service takes care of the equipment so guests can simply enjoy the water.
Of course, the setting itself is the heart of it all. As home to the only private beach on the island, Harbour Village offers the best of Bonaire in a peaceful, beachside retreat. Because everything is just steps away, from the marina to the reef to the spa, guests spend less time getting around and more time relaxing.
The Art of Personalized Hospitality
With guests ranging from diving enthusiasts to travelers seeking relaxation and wellness, how do you tailor the guest experience to different expectations while maintaining a consistent luxury standard?
Every stay begins with a conversation. We speak with each guest before they arrive to understand what brings them to Bonaire, whether that’s world-class diving, rest and renewal, or a bit of both, and we shape their experience around it. That personal connection is what allows us to tailor each stay while keeping the same level of care for everyone.
For guests seeking wellness, our spa offers a tranquil space to unwind and restore. But in many ways, the island itself is part of the experience. Bonaire isn’t crowded or hurried; it invites you to slow down. That sense of peace is a true luxury, and it’s one every guest shares, whether they spend their days underwater or by the water’s edge.
And for those who want more, there’s always plenty to do. The beauty of Bonaire is that guests can choose their own pace, and we’re here to make every choice feel effortless.
Operating in a Unique Destination
Bonaire offers remarkable natural assets, from coral reefs to its marine environment. How do you balance delivering an exceptional luxury experience with protecting and preserving the destination that makes Harbour Village so special?
At Harbour Village, we believe true luxury and responsible stewardship go hand in hand. Bonaire’s reefs are the heart of this island and protecting them is part of who we are.
Just offshore, we maintain our own coral nursery: five underwater coral trees that are part of an island-wide reef restoration initiative. Guests don’t just admire the reef; they can help restore it. Through our dive shop, guests can become certified in reef restoration and take part in the work firsthand, an experience many tell us becomes the highlight of their stay.
We also share the project beyond our shores through our live Reef Cam, which lets guests and supporters around the world check in on the nursery and learn more about the restoration effort. It’s our way of inviting everyone to care for this extraordinary place as much as we do.
The People Behind Luxury Service
As VP of Hotel Operations, what are the biggest challenges and opportunities in developing a team that consistently delivers genuine, personalized hospitality, and how do you empower employees to go beyond the expected?
Our greatest strength is our people. Many of our team members have been with Harbour Village for more than 15 years, and some for over 30. That kind of continuity is rare in hospitality, and our guests notice. Many people return year after year not only for Bonaire, but to see the familiar faces who make them feel at home.
That longevity is also what allows us to deliver truly personalized service. When you’ve known a guest for years, you don’t wait to be asked; you remember how they take their coffee, which dive site they love, and what made their last stay special. Our team is trusted to use that knowledge and anticipate needs before they arise.
The opportunity, and the challenge, is to honor that tradition while continuing to evolve. Guest expectations change, and so do we. We invest in ongoing training and stay current with trends in luxury hospitality, so our team’s deep experience is always paired with fresh ideas.
The Future of Island Luxury
Looking ahead, how do you see luxury travelers’ expectations evolving, and what innovations or investments do you believe will shape the future of resort hospitality in destinations like Bonaire?
We see luxury travelers moving away from crowded, one-size-fits-all destinations and toward places that feel authentic, peaceful, and personal. In that sense, Bonaire is perfectly positioned for the future. The island remains wonderfully unspoiled and largely undiscovered. There are no crowds and no chain restaurants, just a genuine local character and the rare luxury of calm. Getting around is easy, and the pace of life invites you to truly unwind.
Bonaire is also far more than a diver’s paradise. It’s welcoming to every kind of traveler, with plenty to explore for those who want adventure, and every opportunity to do absolutely nothing for those who don’t.
Looking ahead, we believe wellness will define the next chapter of resort hospitality, and we’re investing accordingly. We’re bringing on dedicated wellness mentors, hosting wellness retreats, upgrading our fitness center with new equipment, and introducing innovative spa treatments. Our goal is for every guest to leave not just rested, but genuinely restored.
