Augmentation, Not Substitution: How Canouan Estate Is Rethinking the Human-Tech Balance

A Spotlight Interview with Vaibhav Garg, Group Director of Human Resources at Canouan Estate Resort & Villas | INSPIRE Speaker Series

The conversation around technology in luxury hospitality tends to land in one of two places: excitement about what's possible, or anxiety about what might be lost. Vaibhav Garg sits between them. As Group Director of Human Resources at Canouan Estate Resort & Villas, he works at the intersection of people strategy and technology adoption every day, and his perspective is clear: the tools are only as good as the team wielding them.

Garg joins the stage at INSPIRE Luxury Hospitality Conference this December in Orlando for a panel on supercharging the human-plus-tech model in luxury hospitality. In this preview conversation, he shares what the industry is getting right, what it's still misunderstanding, and why the strongest technology implementations begin with people.

The Misconception That Won't Quit

The biggest misread in the industry right now, Garg says, is the belief that technology can fully replace the human connections that define luxury service. Smart check-ins, AI-driven personalization, and data collation are powerful. They build consistency and preparedness. But they don't replicate the thing that makes a luxury experience unforgettable.

"The most important component in the business of hospitality is personalization through intuition. Anticipation is the key."

The ability to read a moment, to create something unique for a guest based on instinct and emotional intelligence: that, Garg argues, is irreplaceable. Technology should augment that capability, not attempt to substitute it. One hotel, different guests, different colleagues, the same brand standards, and yet each experience can feel singular. That's the goal.

Rolling Out Change Without Rolling Over Your Team

When Canouan Estate introduces new technology, Garg's approach is rooted in two principles: transparent communication and inclusive training.

The good news, he says, is that this generation of hospitality professionals is genuinely curious about AI and automation. There's appetite for these tools. But appetite alone doesn't ensure adoption. What matters is how the change is communicated, and whether every person in the service chain feels ownership over the process.

At Canouan, technology rollouts are project-based and collaborative. Staff across departments are involved in framing the technology, bringing it into action, and sharing what works and what doesn't. The feedback loop is not a formality. It's how the property gets the most out of every implementation.

"Change should not be considered a threat. It should be a tool for growth."

Data Meets Intuition at the Butler's Desk

Where the human-tech model really comes alive, Garg says, is in the hands of the butler and guest relations teams.

Today's frontline tools can capture guest data from the moment of booking: preferences, past stays, previous service recovery moments, even details as specific as a favorite wine. The system collates it. The skill is in what happens next, when a butler takes that data and turns it into something the guest never expected.

Every good property remembers birthdays and anniversaries. The real work is curating an experience around a returning guest's preferences so seamlessly that the stay feels flawless before they've even thought to ask. A past glitch quietly corrected. A preferred vintage already chilled. A room configured exactly the way they left it.

"Using data with human intuition, both are important."

That combination, the system doing the remembering and the person doing the interpreting, is where luxury hospitality creates moments that technology alone never could.
